Shivastakam


The Great Adi-Shankaracharya has composed this beautiful Hymns on Lord Shiva. Since Shiva is beyond any form so is Advait Vedanta. This hymns has highly praised by the vedic scholar. This hymns reveals Vedic as well as Puranic aspect of Lord Maheshwar. 
So, Let's have a look on the great work of greatest Aacharya  



तस्मै नमः परमकारणकारणाय
दीप्तोज्ज्वलज्ज्वलितपिङ्गललोचनाय 
नागेन्द्रहारकृतकुण्डलभूषणाय
ब्रह्मेन्द्रविष्णुवरदाय नमः शिवाय ॥१॥


Meaning: - Prostration to Shiva (Auspicious Lord), the Ultimate Cause behind all the cause. Brownish Eyes of that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) blazes with brilliance. Nagendra (King of Serpents) becomes Garland of that Lord and Shiva also adorn them as ear-rings. Prostration to that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) who bestows boons to Bramha, Indra and Vishnu. 


श्रीमत्प्रसन्नशशिपन्नगभूषणाय
शैलेन्द्रजावदनचुम्बितलोचनाय 
कैलासमन्दरमहेन्द्रनिकेतनाय
लोकत्रयार्तिहरणाय नमः शिवाय ॥२॥


Meaning: - Prostration to that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) who is filled with "Sri" and adorning ornament is Beautiful Moon and Serpent. Prostration to that Shiva, whose Eye Kiss the face of Devi Parvati who is Daughter of King of Mountain. That Lord dwells on Kailash,  Mandara, and Mahendra Mountains. Prostration to Shiva, who is the remover of Distress of three worlds. 



पद्मावदातमणिकुण्डलगोवृषाय
कृष्णागरुप्रचुरचन्दनचर्चिताय 
भस्मानुषक्तविकचोत्पलमल्लिकाय
नीलाब्जकण्ठसदृशाय नमः शिवाय ॥३॥


Meaning: - Whose Ear-ring adorned with Padmaraga Gem, scattering the divine rays of light, Krishna Agaru and Paste of Sandal wood applied on the divine body of Lord, that Lord who is adorned by blown lotus and flowers of Malika, cling to his Sacred Ash, and throat of that lord appeared as Blue Lotus flower, Prostration to that Auspicious Lord (Shiva). 

लम्बत्सपिङ्गलजटामुकुटोत्कटाय
दंष्ट्राकरालविकटोत्कटभैरवाय 
व्याघ्राजिनाम्बरधराय मनोहराय
त्रैलोक्यनाथनमिताय नमः शिवाय ॥४॥


Meaning: - Long, huge matted hanging hair whose colour is reddish brown  is Crown of that Lord, Horrible form of Bhairava is with dreadful fangs is assumed by that Auspicious Lord who is alluring and wears Skin of Tiger, Prostration to Auspicious Lord (Shiva).




दक्षप्रजापतिमहामखनाशनाय
क्षिप्रं महात्रिपुरदानवघातनाय 
ब्रह्मोर्जितोर्ध्वगकरोटिनिकृन्तनाय
योगाय योगनमिताय नमः शिवाय ॥५॥


Meaning: - The one who is destroyer of Sacrifice organised by Daksha Prajapati, the destroyer of Demon Tripura, who tamed the pride of Bramha by eliminating  his upperhead, Prostration to that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) worshiped through Yoga and Personification of Yoga. 

संसारसृष्टिघटनापरिवर्तनाय
रक्षः पिशाचगणसिद्धसमाकुलाय 
सिद्धोरगग्रहगणेन्द्रनिषेविताय
शार्दूलचर्मवसनाय नमः शिवाय ॥६॥


Meaning: - Prostration to that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) re-creator of Cosmos, accompanied by ghost and "Siddha", Planets, Serpents, and Siddha serves that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) who wears the Skin of Tiger. 

भस्माङ्गरागकृतरूपमनोहराय
सौम्यावदातवनमाश्रितमाश्रिताय 
गौरीकटाक्षनयनार्धनिरीक्षनाय
गोक्षीरधारधवलाय नमः शिवाय ॥७॥


Meaning: - Prostration to that Lord, who is allured by Sacred Ashes which is smeared on his divine body, that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) is the refuge of those Blameless Sages who resides in the forest, Gauri observes that Lord through side-glance of her partial opened eyes, Prostration to that Lord who is similiar to stream of white milk. 





आदित्यसोमवरुणानिलसेविताय
यज्ञाग्निहोत्रवरधूमनिकेतनाय 
ऋक्सामवेदमुनिभिः स्तुतिसंयुताय
गोपाय गोपनमिताय नमः शिवाय ॥८॥


Meaning: - Aditya, Soma (Moon), Varuna, Anila serves that Lord  who is inhabitant of Agnihotra and Smoke of fire Sacrifice, that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) is invoked and praised by (foremost) Sages through hymns of Rig-Veda, Sama-Veda and Prostration to that Auspicious Lord (Shiva) who is Protector of all, and worshipped by Gaurdian Deities. 



शिवाष्टकमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ 
शिवलोकमवाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते
 

Whosoever recite this exellent hymn of Shiva near him will (surely) attains his abode and will stay in his union or Bliss.
